Ringwood
Ringwood lies 23km east of Melbourne’s Central Business District in the local government area known as City of Maroondah. At the 2016 Census, Ringwood had a population of 17,471. Before Ringwood village emerged in the mid to late 19th century, the area was primarily agricultural. After the Hawthorn to Lilydale railway line was constructed in 1882, the booming township developed further. The City of Ringwood was declared in 1960.
Construction projects across the area included the famous Eastland Shopping Centre which opened in 1967 and the Cadbury chocolate factory, which was the company’s second largest in Australia. Globally, Ringwood is also known for the development in 1958 of the “Pride of Ringwood” hop, which can be tasted in Foster’s Lager, Victoria Bitter and many other beers around the world.
In 2007 Ringwood became home to Connect East, owner and operator of Melbourne’s second toll road, Eastlink. Eastlink provides Ringwood a significant gateway to the rest of Melbourne. Today, Ringwood is accessible by many major roads and thoroughfares. Ringwood has many parks and reserves including the most notable Ringwood Lake.
Ringwood is one of the nice Melbourne metropolitan activity centers according to Plan Melbourne 2017 – 2050, which is the Melbourne metropolitan planning strategy for the next three decades.
